The race in one picture
The film follows the quarterly revenue of six US-listed chip companies : Intel, Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron, Qualcomm and AMD. Revenue is everything a company sells in a quarter, before costs, in dollars of the day. Every figure comes from what the companies report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
At the start, Intel was far ahead. In early 2019 Nvidia's revenue was about a seventh of Intel's. In the last quarter of 2019 Intel took in $20.2 billion, while Nvidia took in $3.1 billion.
By the second quarter of 2026 the order had turned over. Nvidia took in $96.2 billion, Micron $41.5 billion, Broadcom $29.6 billion and Intel $16.1 billion. AMD ($11.5 billion) and Qualcomm ($9.9 billion) stayed below Intel the whole time. Intel's own revenue grew that quarter, up from $13.6 billion the quarter before, and it was still fourth.

Nvidia : the chips behind AI
Nvidia passed Intel in mid-2023. In its quarter from May to July 2023 it took in $13.5 billion, while Intel took in $12.9 billion from April to June. Nvidia has stayed ahead in every quarter since.
ChatGPT came out at the end of November 2022. Wikipedia's article on it says it accelerated the AI boom that was already under way, and its article on Nvidia says that, as of 2025, the company controlled most of the market for the graphics chips used to train and run AI models. The dates line up with Nvidia's climb, but the revenue figures alone do not show how much of the growth came from AI.

Broadcom : first with software, then with chips
Broadcom bought the software company VMware, in a deal that closed in late November 2023. From then on, Broadcom's revenue includes VMware's software.
That matters for when Broadcom passed Intel. In the second quarter of 2024 Broadcom's total was $13.1 billion against Intel's $12.8 billion. But Broadcom reports two parts, chips and software, and its chip business brought in only $7.3 billion that quarter. The other $5.8 billion came from its software segment, which VMware had just joined. That segment also holds software businesses Broadcom bought earlier, such as CA Technologies and part of Symantec, so not all of it is VMware. On chips alone, Broadcom was still well behind Intel.
That changed later. In its quarter from November 2025 to January 2026, Broadcom's chip revenue was $12.5 billion, still below Intel's $13.7 billion. In its quarter from February to April 2026 it reached $15.0 billion, more than Intel's entire revenue from January to March ($13.6 billion). From May to July 2026 it was $20.8 billion, against Intel's $16.1 billion. This compares Broadcom's chip business with all of Intel's revenue, which also counts what Intel's foundry business earns making chips for other companies, and the revenue of Mobileye, a car-technology company Intel majority-owns.

Micron : memory's turn
Micron makes memory chips, the parts that hold data while computers work. Its revenue dipped at the start of 2025, rose through the rest of the year, and then jumped : in the two quarters to late May 2026 it about tripled, to $41.5 billion. It passed Intel early in 2026.
When Micron reported those results in June 2026, its chief executive, Sanjay Mehrotra, said its record results "reflect the strategic value of memory in the AI era". That is the company's own explanation.
Micron has already reported its next quarter, late May to early September 2026 : $54.2 billion. The film stops at the second quarter of 2026, the last one with figures for all six companies in its data.

How to read these numbers
The companies' quarters do not line up. Nvidia's year ends in late January, Micron's in early September, Broadcom's in early November. Each company's quarter is placed in the calendar quarter that holds most of it. So "the second quarter of 2026" means roughly March to May for Micron, April to June for Intel, and May to July for Nvidia and Broadcom. The months named in this piece are rounded the same way. We checked the passing points with two other ways of lining up the quarters : spreading each quarter's revenue evenly over the days it covers, and placing each quarter by the month it ends. The close crossings of 2023 and 2024 can move by up to three quarters that way. Lined up by the month each quarter ends, the order in the second quarter of 2026 is the same.
Revenue is not profit, and it is not only chips. Intel's figure is the whole company. Broadcom's includes software. "Fourth" means fourth among these six. Big chipmakers based outside the US, such as Taiwan's TSMC and Korea's Samsung, are not in the comparison.
